Section B - Rules of the Road

Section B is the biggest part of the KPP theory exam: 35 of the 70 questions — half your paper — test Malaysian road rules and driving law. It covers right-of-way at junctions and roundabouts, overtaking rules, safe following distance, speed limits for different roads and vehicles, seat belt and child restraint requirements, license classes and conditions, and what the law requires after an accident.

Unlike Section A, these are mostly judgment questions rather than pure memorisation. A typical question describes a situation — approaching an unmarked junction, being tailgated, seeing an emergency vehicle behind you — and asks what you should do. Two options often sound reasonable; the correct answer is the one that is both legal and safest. Slow down, give way, and never assume the other driver will yield: if you keep those principles in mind, most scenario questions answer themselves.

The questions that trip people up are the ones with numbers: national speed limits versus municipal limits, probationary (P) license rules, blood alcohol limits, and stopping distances at different speeds. Those cannot be reasoned out — they simply have to be memorised.
